Stroud Women's Refuge has been offering help, advice and support to families affected by domestic abuse for over 35 years. We offer a confidential service, run by women, for women and their children.
Domestic violence is one of the most common crimes in our society today.
- 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence
- Every week, in the UK, 2 women are killed by their partner or ex-partner
- Women aged 16-29 are at the greatest risk of experiencing domestic violence
- Domestic violence offences account for around 25% of all assaults recorded by the Police
- It has more repeat victims than any other crime. On average there will be 35 assaults before a victim calls the Police
- 90% of children are in the same room, or the next room, when violence is taking place
- 70% of women in refuges say their partner has also been physically violent to the children
- Domestic violence costs in excess of £23 billion per year
